Reality Check

Recently a friend and I went out to eat.
I admit it has been quite some time since I've ordered out (cooking for yourself is waaay healthier and waaaay cheaper).

We looked over the menu, placed orders for the children and husbands and were finally seeking a delectable dish for each of us (as the main cook in a house full of people, this is a task you take your time on to ensure you made the best choice!).
To our delight we saw something called: BEEF SALAD.
Beef with carrot, cilantro, garlic, and more...sounds absolutely drool worthy.

We both agreed to the same thing and anxiously awaited our orders.
Where things took a turn was when we opened our containers, forks in hand and minds ready for ultimate tastiness, only to be greeted by a green salad (spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, & other veggies) with a little bit of beef on top.

Major disappointment.

Apparently my thoughts of a beef salad do not correlate with mainstream-follow-the-food- guidelines-idea of a beef salad. What I was hoping for was indeed a salad of beef versus salad with some beef.

Why the Beef Over Beef?

Why I am obsessed with beef is because of all the good things it provides:
  1. L-carnitine. This nutrient is integral in fat metabolism as it transports fats to the mitochondria which then gets synthesized (burn the fat!). It has been found to benefit those with heart issues and diabetes.
  2. Contains high amounts of cysteine, glutamate, and glycine which are used to make glutathione. Glutathione prevents illness and inflammation.
  3. Big in B vitamins. These vitamins are essential for mood, DNA repair, digestion, and so much more. A majority of people are deficient specifically in B12, which is attainable through animal products only.
This list is just a few of the many benefits you get from consuming beef.

Sadly the USDA food guidelines, which get reviewed every 5 years, do not promote sufficient consumption of beef. In fact they all out deter people from it.

Why?
That is a good question.
Part of it is due to who is on the advisory board.
As with many things, what you are told and what is true don't always line up.
